Welcoming
Communication and Engagement - How Did I do So Far?
Since elected I have:
Sent 20 electronic newsletters and grown the mailing list from ZERO to 106 subscribers.
Started a Quarterly 5B01 Neighborhood Meeting & Cleanup at Bunker Hill Park (check the Calendar).
Widely distributed fliers twice and distributed targeted fliers for blocks adjacent to Speed Hump installations.
Stood up a Transportation and Public Space Committee for Commission 5B to provide a better public forum, with more time and space, to learn about issues and engage with DC Agencies.
I proudly voted FOR these Resolutions and Motions my colleagues on Commission 5B introduced to support more housing:
October 18, 2023: 1800 Hamlin St. NE VDR (23-18) Commissioner Piekara placed a motion on For 5B to support the relief requested based on certain conditions. Commissioner Borrego seconded. Motion approved by a vote of 5 AYEs.
March 15, 2023: Resolution Regarding Historic Preservation Review Board Case 22-328 / Brookland Bowling Alleys (3726 10th Street NE) (adopted 5-0)
March 15, 2023: 2026 Jackson Street NE - Commissioner Piekara moved to adopt the Form 129 in support of the BZA application, with caveats as described in that form. Commissioner Costello seconded. Approved unanimously.
March 15, 2023: 3315 12th Street NE - Commissioner Costello moved to adopt the Form 129 in support of the BZA application with certain caveats as described in that document. Seconded by Commissioner Crocker. Approved by a vote of 4-0-1.
I want our neighborhood, and all of Washington, DC to be welcoming to all who choose to live, work, and play here. One way to welcome neighbors as well as connect existing neighbors, is through communication and community. It is important to know what is going on in your neighborhood. This enables you to take action, help, or engage, to connect to the community. When you do not know what is going on, it makes it more challenging to connect, whether to find kids for playdates, tools to borrow, or neighbors to help out.
communication
Communication is key to connectedness. I aim to be available and responsive through multiple channels (such as email, twitter, and Facebook) while also seeking to start a newsletter. I want to ensure folks who are not connected also have access to information and can contact me to minimize the digital divide. Additionally, I want to ensure the 5B Commission is transparent so neighbors can be engaged and provide valuable insights, feedback, and help.
community
In particular as it concerns housing, the amount of housing we are building does not match demand. Values and rents continue to rise, which prices and pushes out the people who make this city great. Zoning issues and development are one area where Commissioners can have significant impact. I aim to learn more about this topic and seek ways to ensure everyone who wants to stay in the neighborhood can, while welcoming new neighbors.
